User Research in Indonesia
Remote or lab-based user research in Indonesia, with real customers and local, Senior UX Researchers
Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago which must be considered when thinking about organising UX research or user research. It is an increasingly important market and belongs to the so called “MINT” countries of Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey. These four markets are expected to grow strongly and we see increasing demand for user research in Indonesia.
UX24/7 is a global design research agency that operates with our own team of Senior UX Researchers. All our Senior UX Researchers have been evaluated as part of their joining process to ensure they have the skills, capabilities and experience to deliver user research and UX Research to the high standards we expect. We have a small team in Indonesia but as always they are senior UX Researchers.
Remote and lab-based user research in Indonesia
We run user research and UX Research in Indonesia using remote and lab-based facilities. Remote methodologies use online screen sharing technologies such as Zoom, which despite security concerns in 2020 is still used widely in Indonesia. In fact, conducting research remotely in Indonesia is very effective with Indonesians reportedly spending 1-2 hours on video calls on a regular basis.
For lab based testing we recognize that our customers don’t necessarily want to be tied to Jakarta. Although with a population of 8.5 million it is the most popular location for conducting user research in Indonesia. We are able to use facilities in other major cities such as Surabaya, Medan or Bandung. We have various advanced testing kits that work in the various different facility set ups we utilize.
In all cases we provide a viewing experience that includes picture-in-picture video and where required, simultaneous translation into whatever your native language is. Recordings of the sessions are also provided with your local language as well as with the Indonesian original.
Finally, our Senior UX Researchers provide a detailed analysis from the session. Our deliverables include observations and issues together with analysis and actionable recommendations. Our team also speak English so we are able to deliver a playback session with you either in Indonesian or English.
So, what are you waiting for? If you want to conduct user research in Indonesian, we can help.

UX Research and user research in Indonesia
Like India, Indonesia is also made up of a wide and diverse number of cultures and religions. Because of the ethnic makeup of the country, Indonesians identify themselves locally before nationally.
Over 300 different languages are spoken in Indonesia and whilst Indonesian is the official language it is actually only the mother tongue for 7% of the population. But it is the second language of the vast majority. Nevertheless it is important to consider the language choice when planning for moderation.
Once again, detailed specifications are required to ensure appropriate participants are identified. West Java is the most populous region of Indonesia, home to about 18.5% of the population. As Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago thought needs be put into location if face to face research is desired.
Indonesia is a secular state with six officially recognized religions, the largest of which is Islam. Research sessions should be scheduled so that the call to prayer (5 set times during the day) can be observed.
Research technique
Not wishing to criticize or cause shame, Indonesians can be indirect in their feedback. Questions should be phrased to allow for this and the discussion guide needs to be carefully constructed.
Indonesians generally speak in quiet, subdued tones. This does not indicate a lack of enthusiasm so it is important participants aren’t misunderstood. It is better to have a local moderator to make sure the session is interpreted correctly and that is what UX247 provide when running user research in Indonesia.
As the table indicates some national holidays are subject to moving dates based on the calendar year. The UX24/7 team will advise you of any impact caused by national holidays to your proposed project timeline. This will happen at the planning stage so that the project runs smoothly.
